Exhibition
The museum is housed in the southern wing of Valdemars Slot. The wing was built in 1760 and has been used as stables for the castle’s livestock and work horses.
Today the building has been reinforced with a simple iron structure in order to open up the indoor area. The old hay loft has been removed to allow boats to be displayed with full sails.
The exhibition boasts around 35 vessels of different types and sizes. You can see dinghies, kayaks, row boats, sailboats and motorboats. Posters with photos, drawings and cobber plate engravings tell the story of yachting all the way from 1855, the year of the first Danish race in the waters near Flensborg.
We also tell the story of the first Danish sailing clubs: Danish Yachting Society (from 1891 Royal Danish Yachting Club) and Svendborg Sound’s Yachting Club, both started back in 1866. You can also see old out-board motors, water skis, full and half models. We have a large collection of full models, Olympic medals and so much more.
We use the entire room, giving our guests an experience wherever they look. Visit the museum and see Sven Billesbølle’s STORMY II, a boat in which he circumnavigated the world one and a half time. See if you can find the Ice Boat of Her Majesty the Queen and ask one of the crew members about our competitions for children.
